The original adaptation from around 1958 with Spencer Tracy was an inept attempt (in my opinion). It was merely a reading of Hemmingway's classic with pictures basically. For those unaware the techniques utilized in literature are vastly different from those used in cinema & rightfully so. The brilliance of this book is quite personal & potentially profound depending upon your interpretation. For myself this moves literarily on many levels just like the ocean. As you travel below the surface you will encounter an enormous amount of various currents, life forms, temperatures, turbulence, & possibilities, some of which may be lethal. In this BRILLIANT ADAPTATION with Anthony Quinn there has been added a spectacular feature that is unwritten . . . This seemingly simple addition incorporated into the script is a device of immense value for the transition to film. Otherwise the viewer would only see the blinding glare upon the surface & become thoroughly convinced that this story was merely about a lonely aging fisherman. If you enjoy the hidden depths of this book please do not miss out on this BRILLIANT ADAPTATION! Enjoy-
